Controlling Roaches in a Food Establishment
The key to the control of German cockroaches is to integrate all the pest management tools available (inspection, sanitation, treatment and exclusion). Integrated pest management is more effective and helps control resistance problems from developing.
As part of integrated pest management approach, we will carry out a risk assessment on your facility to determine the level of risk of infestation i.e. high risk, moderate risk and low risk areas. The high risk areas are areas identified as those that are most susceptible to infestations as a result of abundance of food and water. The moderate risk areas are those that may be prone to infestation. While low risk areas are those that are not likely to be infested.

Our Responsibilities as Pest Control Professionals:
- Develop a cockroach management plan and evaluate the effectiveness of the plan on a regular basis
- Ensure the pest population is adequately controlled
- Carry our pest activity monitoring through regular follow-up and inspections
- Advise on best practices for denying pests food, water and access
- Educate clients on significance of sanitation and its importance to the success of the total pest management programme
- Provide regular pest control tips and recommendations
What you can do as a client to ensure the success of this pest management plan – Your Responsibilities:
- Sanitation – enforcement of thoroughly cleaning and sanitizing of all equipment and food preparation surfaces at the end of each day. All food droppings between and behind equipment should be cleaned.
- Establish a single point of contact for pest control- this person should have responsibility for working with us to manage pest control in your facility. Any pest sightings should be reported to this person who will document and discuss the information with us. This will help us to focus attention on the problem areas.
- Eliminate all cardboard as soon as supplies are received
- In the store, remove flours, grains, cereals, dried and sugary food items from their original cardboard or paper packaging and store them in air-tight plastic containers with a tight-fitting lid.
- Seal all cracks and crevices and perform needed repairs to prevent pest access to the facility or wall voids.
